Every day, more than three million people go to work in Denmark. We spend the majority of our waking hours at work—and may even take it home with us. For most people, work is not just a source of income, but an important part of life. It is where everyday life is shaped, relationships are formed, identities are created—and where our bodies are put under strain.

Opening October 3, 2026

The Rewards and the Strains of Working Life

The exhibition It’s Just a Job explores what going to work does to us—both body and soul. Why do some people thrive, while others wear down?

The exhibition balances the enriching and the demanding aspects of working life. After all, it’s not just a job. It tells stories of community, professional pride and job satisfaction—but also of attrition, accidents, stress, sexism and discrimination.

The World’s Best Working environment?

Yet marked by record stress levels, workplace accidents and #MeToo scandals

ecord levels of stress, serious workplace accidents, #MeToo scandals and a growing secondary labour market show that a good working environment requires constant attention.

In the exhibition, visitors can follow the development of the working environment—from a narrow focus on machines, accidents and factories to today’s broader understanding, which includes the body, the mind, relationships, pace and dignity. Through personal stories and new insights, visitors meet the people who keep Denmark running every day: apprentices and social care assistants, craftspeople, industrial workers, shop staff, teachers, nurses, service workers, chefs, migrant workers and many more.
