I would like to view images from the Labor Museum & ABA collection. What can I do?
Parts of the Workers’ Museum & ABA’s large photo collection have been digitized and are available by searching our archive and library database. We are continuously working to digitize more photos.
In order to display the photographs, we have entered into an agreement with VISDA (formerly Copydan Billeder), which manages the photographers’ rights. The agreement obliges us to watermark the images. This is because the copyright to a photograph belongs to the photographer and not the cultural institution that owns the physical photograph.
How can I order photos for educational use?
Photos can be ordered directly in our Archive and Library database. After ordering, you will be contacted by staff to arrange payment and delivery.
If you have any questions about ordering photos, please contact aba@arbejdermuseet.dk.
High-resolution image files can be sent for a fee. The fixed rate is DKK 500 for one image, DKK 850 for two, and additional volume discounts when buying more.
NOTE: When using photographs and other material from the Workers’ Museum & ABA’s photo collection, please note that you are responsible for complying with copyright law. Please also remember to properly credit the photographer and the Workers’ Museum when using photographs from the photo collection.
If the photo is protected by copyright, the photo cannot be used without either permission from the photographer or their copyright manager, typically VISDA.
The general rules of copyright law distinguish between photographic images and photographic works. A photograph without a work is called a photographic image and is protected for 50 years after the image was taken. However, all photographic images taken before January 1, 1970 are not protected by copyright, whereas a photographic work is protected for 70 years after the photographer’s death.
Whether a photograph is a so-called photographic image or a photographic work is a judgment call that must be made individually for each image. It’s a large and time-consuming task, and the rules are difficult to manage.
If you are unsure about what you can and cannot do, you can contact VISDA.
I have taken one or more of the photographs in the Workers’ Museum & ABA’s photo database, but I don’t remember giving permission for you to show the images. How does this work?
All photos in our photo database are reproduced under the copyright law’s contractual license provision in §24a. This means that VISDA has granted the license for you.
You can therefore contact VISDA for payment of remuneration.
We make every effort to identify authors and assess the copyright status of materials as best we can. But anyone can make mistakes. We therefore reserve the right that material may be incorrectly registered.
We are very interested in hearing from anyone who knows anything about the photographs/drawings where we do not know the author. Write to aba@arbejdermuseet.dk if you have further information about photographers/authors or about the images in general.
What is good visual practice?
The material may not be used in a context that discredits the author’s reputation or integrity or violates the image’s personal reputation or privacy. This applies regardless of whether the copyright has expired or not.
Have we infringed your copyright?
If we have used an image without having the proper consent in place, we would like to rectify this by removing the image from the website, Facebook or otherwise, as soon as possible. Please contact the library at aba@arbejdermuseet.dk.
