About the exhibition

On the balcony in the Banquet Hall, you can experience the exhibition The Movement 1871-2021, which was created in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the labour movement.

Experience the early beginnings of the movement in the 1870s, and delve into the cultural rise of the labour movement in the 1920s and the great mergers of the trade union movement in the 21st century. And explore the movement’s own representations of vast networks of organisations.

A NEW movement

With industrialisation in the second half of the 19th century, a whole new social class emerged – the working class. Over time, the workers organised themselves, and on October 15th 1871, the International Workingmen’s Association was founded.

That same year, the workers had founded their own newspaper, The Socialist. This was the start of the labour movement, which over time became the strongest popular movement in Danish history.

The workers’ will and ability to organise has given the labour movement the strength to influence and change Danish society. And for 150 years, workers have organised themselves across all parts of society and throughout the country.
